What are the best sources for Omega Fatty Acids?
The truth about Omega fatty acids.
Many people really do not know what Omega Fatty Acids are or what they do in your body.
First off let’s discuss what the differences are between Omega 3’s, Omega 6’s and Omega 9’s are.
The Omega 3 and Omega 6 are called essential fatty acids (EFA) because they cannot be produced by the body and must be ingested by an outside source whereas Omega 9 can be created in the body especially when your balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids are at the proper balance.
Omega 3 fatty acids have been reported to have an effect on the cardio vascular system and brain function. Sources of the Omega 3’s come usually from green leafy veggies, flax seed oil, walnuts and oily fish such as salmon, sardines and tuna. Udo’s Choice Oil is also a great source. I will elaborate more on the reason why I talk so much about Udo’s Oil.
Omega 6 Fatty Acids have been reported to have an effect on metabolism and hormone production.
Linoleic acid an Omega 6 is highly involved with cell membrane activity and metabolic regulation in other words protecting our very building blocks of our bodies as well regulating muscle production versus fat loss. Sources of Omega 6 Fatty Acids include eggs, nuts, whole grains, healthy vegetable oils and Udo’s Choice Oil.
Omega 9 Fatty Acids are considered non-essential because they can be produced by the body however research has shown that requires the proper balance of Omega 3’s and 6’s. The Omega 9 Fatty Acids have been linked to brain and cardiac health as well. Studies reflect a lot of data showing that proper Omega 9 balance tend to increase the HDL “good cholesterol” and lower the LDL “bad cholesterol” in various studies. Sources of Omega 9 include of course the body’s production as well from food sources such as sunflower oil. Avocado, olives, olive oil and Udo’s choice oil.
How do you easily make sure you are getting the proper blend of these oils?
- Make sure you are eating the foods that contain the essential and even some of the non-essential oils. Always try to find the most healthy sources for these foods which would include being organic whenever possible, free from hormones, non GMO foods and whenever possible minimal processing and in general raw and in its most natural state. Some foods cannot be consumed raw so use your common sense in that case such as eggs and other animal products. Most vegetables should be consumed raw as cooking tends to kill their enzymes and nutrients.
- Pick supplements that meet the same criteria as the food sources. My personal favorite is UDOS’s Choice as it meets all the healthy criteria and Dr. Udo has dedicated his research and creation of his product are making sure that you are getting the proper balance of the Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids in one place. The best part about Udo’s oil is it tastes great and can be used for a base for salad dressing, added to protein shakes and smoothies and even consumed straight because it tastes great!
- Combining these oils with greens tend to make sure of the proper absorption of vitamins A,D,E & K as these are all fat soluble vitamins that tend to be in greens!
In conclusion it is very important to pay attention to healthy fat consumption for cardiovascular, brain and metabolic health!
